Accessibility Statement

We believe that everyone has a right to access information, whoever they are, and we are committed to ensuring that as many people as possible can access and use this web site.

To this end, we have worked hard to ensure that every page is laid out in an easy-to-navigate way, and we have included a site map, search facility and help section, should you experience any problems.

We have taken care to ensure that this web site is usable with screen readers such as Lynx. Furthermore, in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 Part Four (as amended by the Special Educational Needs Disability Act 2001) and the Disability Discrimination Act 2005, we have made every attempt to ensure that all of the pages within this web site comply with all of the Priority 1 (A) accessibility checkpoints, as defined in the Web Accessibility Initiative's (WAI) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. At the time of writing (October 2005), the following browsers are known to support access keys:

  • Mozilla (9.xx builds, versions 1.xx onwards)
  • Netscape Navigator (version 6 onwards)
  • Opera (version 7 onwards for PC, version 6 onwards for Mac)

How to use access keys

The way access keys work depends upon which browser you are using.

  • Windows computers:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer: Hold down the ALT key and select the access key, then press ENTER
    • Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox: Hold down the ALT key and select the access key
    • Opera: Hold down the SHIFT and ESC keys (making sure to press SHIFT first), release both keys, then select the access key
  • Mac computers:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer: Hold down the CTRL key and select the access key, then press ENTER
    • Netscape/Mozilla: Hold down the CTRL key and select the access key

Text

The text on this web site is scalable, and can be increased and decreased in size. How to do this depends upon which browser you are using:

  • Firefox. You can increase the text size via the View menu: View » Text Size » Increase/Decrease
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (recent versions). You can increase the text size via the View menu: View » Text Size » Smallest/Small/Medium/Larger/Largest.
  • Netscape (recent versions). You can increase the text size via the View menu: View » Text Zoom » Smaller/Larger.
  • Opera. You can increase the text size via the View menu: View » Zoom » -10% / +10%

Visual Verification Codes

As of November 2006 all of our site e-mail forms now require you to enter a verification code which is shown as a distorted image.

This is due to the rapid increase of automated programs that can submit spam via such forms. Such programs can't "read" the characters in the image and, therefore, we are able to keep spam at bay. This, in turn, means that we are able to offer a better quality web service as our site isn't being flooded with spam traffic.

Whilst we are aware that such verification codes will present a major problem to people who are blind, have low vision, or a learning disability such as dyslexia, we are regrettably unable to offer an alternative at the moment. However, we fully intend to rectify this in the future as alternatives to visual verification codes emerge.
