Workshop - Semantic Interoperability: A Practical Approach

Held in conjunction with the BREIN project, we are delighted to report that our first workshop was a great success.

Attended by over 30 delegates, the workshop took place on 25th March as part of the I-ESA '08 (Interoperability for Enterprise Software and Applications) conference in Berlin, Germany.

The initial session was industry-focussed and demonstrated how semantics could be applied to solve or enhance a wide range of existing business processes. The keynote speech, delivered by OASIS UBL Vice-Chair Tim McGrath, was an imaginative discussion about semantics and their history, emphasising that the artifacts are not the message and that methodologies start to look like alchemy if pursued to obsessive lengths.

Other speakers included the European Commission's Arian Zwegers, with a presentation entitled "Software, Services, and Semantics in FP7", Stuart Campbell (STASIS Project Manager) and Eduardo Oliveros (BREIN Project Manager).

The afternoon session focussed on the technical issues faced by STASIS and BREIN and included paper presentations, generating a lively discussion on new and emerging issues related to semantic interoperability.

BREIN is an IST FP6 project which aims to create a new infrastructure to allow companies to interact with higher levels of dynamism, adaptability and security. These new levels will be achieved by integrating grid technologies, multi-agent systems and the semantic web.
